Directors of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn cited Vybz Kartel’s appeal as the reason for dropping the case against the dancehall artist.

Kartel’s lead attorney Tom Tavares-Finson made an application in court last week to have the case adjourned because the witnesses in this case and the murder trial are the same.

Journalists who covered Vybz Kartel trial claims he has received death threats {VIDEO}

Vybz Kartel going to prison

A story published on the front page of the Observer yesterday about Vybz Kartel being a police informant is having some ripple effects.
According to new reports, two journalists employed by the Observer have been getting death threats since the story went viral.
Nationwide News Network reporter/producer Abka Fitz-Henley and Jamaica ObserverCrime/Court Desk Editor Karyl Walker says they received several phone calls from thugs threatening to kill them over the story.
The Director of Public Prosecution and several other persons involved in the trial have also reported that they are getting death threats from thugs aligned to the self-proclaim Worl’Boss.
Reps for Vybz Kartel sent Urban Islandz a statement from the embattled deejay condemning the death threats.

Vybz Kartel full statement:

It was brought to my attention this morning by a member of my legal team that a number of persons including journalists have reported receiving threats from persons purportedly acting on my behalf.

During my sentencing hearing my Attorney Tom Tavares-Finson indicated to the court that I hold no ill-will to any of the persons involved in my trial neither the Police, Prosecutors, Executives from Digicel and certainly not any member of the Media who covered my trial in a manner which exposed the weaknesses in the Prosecution’s case for all the world to see.

I reiterate the position “I hold no ill-well [sic] to anyone who was involved in my trial” and I put my faith in the judicial system and the appeal process on which we have now embarked.

I appeal to any misguided individual or individuals who may think it appropriate to seek to threaten or intimidate anyone, to stop it.

Such action is not helping me or my fellow appellants and is playing into the hands of the Police and others who are seeking to discredit me and prejudice the fair hearing of my appeal.

In the meantime I thank my family, friends and fans who continue to support and have faith in me.

Signed: Adidja Palmer

Attorney denies police claims about Kartel + Did Vybz Kartel Turn Informant, Snitched On Wanted Men In Portmore?

vybz-kartel

Two journalists who covered the recent murder trial of entertainer, Vybz Kartel, have been receiving death threats, their media houses reported Monday.

The Jamaica Observer newspaper said that its Crime/Court Desk Editor, Karyl Walker, had been receiving several threatening calls on his cellular phone after the paper published the latest article on the case on Sunday involving the entertainer, who was given a life sentence for murder.

Nationwide News Network said it reporter/producer Abka Fitz-Henley had also received death threats after the radio station aired the voice notes that were used by the prosecution in convicting the artiste and three co-accused — Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St John — for the muder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.

The voice notes were taken from Vybz Kartel’s phone. They were compiled into a 10-minute-long package with musical interludes and narrated by Fitz-Henley.

Nationwide News Network manager and senior journalist Cliff Hughes confirmed the threat against Fitz-Henley saying he had written to the Commissioner of Police, formally on the issue and asking that he provide “the necessary guidance and protection.

“In two instances last week after we played the voice notes from the trial, Abka got a direct call to his phone telling him to leave Kartel alone, if not all kinda things could happen to him,” Hughes said.

“Last Monday morning, the security guard at our front desk received a call from a man demanding to speak with me. When he heard that I wasn’t there, he told the security guard to tell Abka to leave…Kartel alone,” Hughes said, adding that the caller had indicated they knew where Fitz-Henry lives and would murder him.

The Jamaica Observer reported that the journalists were not the only ones threatened following the trial.

It said that Sergeant Patrick Linton, the former cybercrime boss, who gave technical evidence in the matter, had received threats and there was an attempt to firebomb his house, while the director of public prosecutions and her team who handled the case also received death threats.

TAVARES-FINSON… no meeting was ever held between Mr Palmer and any police officer

nor was Mr Palmer ever asked by any police officer to give them any information

ATTORNEY Tom Tavares-Finson has denied information in yesterday's Sunday Observer article that outlined that convicted entertainer Vybz Kartel gave the police information that led to the apprehension of wanted men and the recovery of 17 firearms.

The attorney also rubbished claims made by the police that Vybz Kartel was an influential figure in the deadly Spanish Town-based Klansman Gang, and that the gang carried out killings on his behalf.

"That is nothing but further propaganda by the police," said the senior attorney, who described the police's comments as "highly irresponsible".

"The presentation by the Observer yesterday reflected just another attempt by the police and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to prejudice the appeal of Mr Palmer," Tavares-Finson said.

"We note that the source of the information is reported as being anonymous, but we recognise the hand of a particular individual at the Corporate Communication Network," Tavares-Finson added.

The article said that Vybz Kartel (real name Adidja Palmer) had met with the police to give them information when he realised that detectives were closing in on him for the murder of associate Clive 'Lizard' Williams, in August 2011, over the disappearance of two illegal firearms.

"No meeting was ever held between Mr Palmer and any police officer nor was Mr Palmer ever asked by any police officer to give them any information. That is a lie," the attorney said, as he disputed other assertions made in the front page article.

Additionally, Tavares-Finson noted that the article reported the police source as saying that the police had evidence that was not used in the five-week trial. He said he's hearing about the so-called further evidence for the first time, and that the director of public prosecutions should say why that evidence wasn't put before the court.

Vybz Kartel, Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St John have been sentenced to life imprisonment for Williams' murder. They are to serve 35, 30 and 25 years behind bars before being eligible for parole.

Yesterday, Tavares-Finson told the Observer that the men have signed their appeal documents which are to be filed with the Court of Appeal.

"We are confident that we will, regardless of the machinations of the police, get a fair hearing at the Court of Appeal," Tavares-Finson said.

Vybz Kartel prison photo

Was Vybz Kartel trying to become a police informant during his grueling murder trial?

According to a report in the Observer on Sunday, police sources say Vybz Kartel approached the police high command with information about several wanted men and illegal firearms in return for immunity.

According to the police source, Kartel information lead to a massive police investigation that ultimately recovered 17 illegal firearms and the arrest of several wanted men.

“He wanted to meet with the commissioner who assigned a member of the high command to meet him,” the source said. “During the meeting he offered information on wanted men in Portmore and also coughed up a number of illegal firearms. He was trying to broker adeal to get the charges dropped.”

The source, who is a senior cop in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, JCF, says Vybz Kartel made the offer to become an informant when he realized his back was against the wall in the murder trial for the death of Clive “Lizard” Williams.

Urban Islandz sources inside the police force also confirmed that Kartel did met with the police high command.

If these allegations of being a snitch/informer are true, does this mean Vybz Kartel life is in danger in prison?

Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, as well as, Shawn “Storm” Campbell, Andre St John and Kahira Jones were all convicted on March 13, 2014 for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. All four men were handed down life sentences on April 3, 2014.

Vybz-Kartel-and-shorty

Vybz Kartel was handed down a lengthy sentencing of 35 years to life in a Jamaican prison after being convicted for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.

Kartel’s common-law-wife, Tanesha ‘Shorty’ Johnson, says she plans to wait 35 years for her man to be released from prison.

This means she will be celibating for 35 years but it even gets more interesting because Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, will be 73 years old when he is eligible for parole.

Being eligible for parole doesn’t mean an automatic release from prison.

“I will definitely be waiting, I don’t have any reason to move on,” Shorty told the Star. “I intend to stand up for my three sons and also focus on him [Vybz Kartel]. The kids are not 100 per cent, but I am trying to keep them focused. I am taking it very, very hard, but I am not going to give up. There is a God and I have hope.”

Tanesha ‘Shorty’ Johnson has three sons together and have been together for many years. Two of their sons who goes by the stage names Little Addi and Little Vybz recently releaseda new single “PG13 Gimmi Di Money.”

Shawn Storm Rejected Deal From Prosecutor To Testify Against Vybz Kartel Who Got Hard Labour That Includes Sanitation & Landscaping

Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington, has labeled convicted entertainer Vybz Kartel as a gang leader, whose gang was responsible for more than a hundred murders.

He made that assertion in an interview with Dionne Jackson Miller, which was aired on RJR’s Beyond the Headlines and TVJ’s All Angles on Wednesday evening.

The Commissioner's statement came a week after the entertainer and three others were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. He said the police had been tracking Kartel's activities for sometime but, he claimed, the entertainer was protected because of his popularity.

Investigating the police

The Commissioner also revealed that it was his office which started investigations into allegations of extra-judicial killings by some members of the police force in Clarendon.

Elaborating, he explained that his office initiated the probe after its own information revealed that there were activities by some members of the force that needed further investigation. He added that once the probe was at a certain stage, it was then handed over to INDECOM.

“There was indeed a red flag… I ordered investigations, I ordered the transfer individuals and those investigations were well advanced before INDECOM made a public statement about it,” he asserted.

The Commissioner appeared to differ with INDECCOM in one particular respect; that of when might have been the right time to make a public statement on investigation.

“I would not have made a public statement at the time they spoke because I didn’t want to alert individuals of the possibility of an ongoing investigation. They have spoken,” he said.

(AUDIO) Vybz Kartel's Sons Pick Up the Mic & Enter The Dancehall. What do you think?Vybz Kartel and Shawn Storm

Shawn Storm remained loyal to Vybz Kartel throughout the grueling murder trial that sent them both to prison for life.
According to new reports, the prosecution approached Shawn Storm, real name Shawn Campbell, attorney to strike a deal to testify against Vybz Kartel in return for his freedom.
Speaking with the Observer, Shawn Storm’s attorney Miguel Lorne says his client rejected the deal because he feel he was not part of any plan to kill Lizard.

“I was approached by the prosecutor who made the offer,” Lorne said. “I discussed it with my client and he said there was no fact. He was not part of any plan to kill anybody so he refused. He said there was no fact. As an attorney I have to follow my client’s instructions.”

“He refused because he maintains that he was never involved in any murder and to take that offer would have signalled that he was guilty of participating in murder,” Lorne added. “I even discussed it with his mother and she said she was glad he refused.”

Director of Public Prosecution Paula Llewellyn also confirmed that lead prosecution in the high profile murder trial made the offer.

A rep for the former Portmore Empire deejay also weigh in on the news saying that innocent men don’t cut deal with prosecutors.

“If your innocent then why would you want to cut a deal with this prosecutor who is bent on sending you to prison for a crime you did not commit,”

Shawn Storm was sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice Lennox Campbell in the HomeCircuit court last week Thursday. He will be eligible for parole in 25 years.

Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, was sentenced to life and will be eligible for parole in 35 years.

Kahira Jones and Andre St John were also sentenced to life and will be eligible for parole in 30 and 25 years respectively.

In handing down the hefty sentencing, Justice Lennox Campbell noted that the four men premeditate the murder and put the victim under severe stress leading up to the August 16, 2011 murder.

The judge also noted the gruesomeness of how Clive “Lizard” Williams was killed and how the men took steps to conceal his body and destroyed evidence.

Clive Williams’ body was never found.

“Usually when inmates are given life sentence with hard labour they do a lot of bushing and landscaping,” the source told us. “Also because there are no sanitation workers in at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre, he will be doing sanitation work and yes that includes cleaning toilets and mopping floors.”

The debate over whether or not Vybz Kartel will be recording new music in prison is over.
Lawyers representing the dancehall star says he has no intentions of recording behind bars after carefully evaluating the proposals.

“He has no intention of recording while in custody,” Kartel’s lead attorney Tom Tavares-Finson said after the deejay was sentenced to life imprisonment last Thursday.

Tavares-Finson came to the conclusion after receiving a letter from the judge inquiring about whether or not Kartel should be allowed to make music in prison.

“That is the most ridiculous proposition I have ever heard that he [Kartel] should be given authority to record while in custody,” Tavares-Finson added. “The person was not convicted to do music, he was convicted to do hard labour.”

A rep for the former Portmore Empire said that Kartel says he will not be recording new music in prison given the harsh treatment from the system.

“After the system finish tearing you down then they want to use you, so no Addi [Vybz Kartel] will not be recording new music to make more money for the system to tear down ghetto youths,” the rep said.

Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, Shawn “Storm” Campbell, Andre St John, and Kahira Jones were all given life sentences by a High Court judge on April 3, 2014.

Vybz Kartel will be eligible for parole in 35 years when he is 73 years old.

The four men were convicted of the August 16, 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams, who cops say was killed over two missing guns belonging to Vybz Kartel.

Vybz Kartel going to prison

The Police High Command has issued a lengthy statement on Vybz Kartel high profile trial.
In the statement sent out to the media yesterday, the Police High Command says it has launched a criminal investigation into the handling of the case.
Among the many problems of the case the police listed were witness intimidation, obeah ritualsm conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Read the full statements below:
The Police High Command takes this opportunity to commend the members of the Constabulary who were involved in the investigation and recently concluded murder trial of Adidjah Palmer et al. The case generated a considerable amount of public interest and was fraught with challenges for the Police and all others who worked in support of the prosecution to achieve the outcome that was sought. This opportunity is being taken to highlight the fact that this result came only through excellent teamwork on the parts of numerous individuals within and outside of the Constabulary, in particular, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
This landmark case has broken several new frontiers for the Constabulary, most notably in the area of forensic evidence, and in particular, the collection, handling and presentation of evidence from digital devices. Despite challenges from the defence, the digital evidence successfully tied
the accused persons to the crime. However, as the trial progressed, opportunities were presented for the Police to assess the soundness of the techniques and procedures used in the handling of digital evidence, and significant steps are already underway to improve certain procedures in this area.
The case also presented numerous security challenges, which resulted in a considerable amount of resources being deployed to protect the prosecutor, prosecution witnesses, including Police officers, and relatives of the victim. In the aftermath of the trial, additional resources have had to be found to protect some members of the jury. Numerous persons connected to the case in one way or another on the side of the prosecution have expressed concerns about their personal security. In the face of the myriad of challenges, intimidatory tactics and threats to prosecution witnesses throughout the trial, the prosecution could not make a single complaint due to the possibility that it could undermine the right of the accused to a fair trial. Now that the trial is over, we are under no further obligation to remain silent about the challenges and threats endured by the prosecution.
Attempts to Pervert the Course of Justice
During the trial, a number of developments took place which we are now at liberty to highlight. These developments were focused primarily around attempts to pervert the course of justice. First, we would like to highlight that very early during the investigation, it emerged that a female DJ was allegedly instructed by Adidjah Palmer via SMS (text messages) to make a report to the Constant Spring Police Station alleging that she was held up and robbed by Clive Williams, the man we knew at the time to be dead. This matter was investigated by the Police and placed before the court, but was adjourned pending the outcome of the murder trial. This case will be back before the court on June 6, 2014.
Based on material extracted from the cellular phones of the convicted men we became aware that Mr Palmer had become very concerned about the presence of Scenes of Crime investigators gathering evidence at the crime scene at 7 Swallowfield Avenue, St. Andrew. Shortly afterwards, the house was mysteriously torched but there were no signs of any similar concern by Mr. Palmer about the destruction of his residence. The examination done by the Government Forensic Laboratory revealed that the fire was deliberately set as the evidence collected was not consistent with an accidental or non-deliberate fire. Traces of gasoline were found in different sections of the house and on items of furniture.
Another significant development concerned the letter that was purportedly written by the main prosecution witness, Lamar Chow, and submitted to the Public Defender. It must be placed on record that this letter was not written by Mr. Chow. It was quite clear that the preparation of the letter benefitted from interaction with a person who had legal training. When the letter was brought to the attention of the Police, we subtly tested the extent of Mr. Chow’s vocabulary and found that he was not familiar with the legal jargons that were in the letter. We further submitted the letter to the JCF QuestionedDocument Examiner (handwriting expert) who, with the use of the latest computer software that is developed for this purpose, examined the document and concluded that it could never have been written by Mr. Chow. As the science develops, the Police have acquired new computer software which is among the newest tools that are used in the examination of handwriting and other specimen, and it is much more likely to produce an accurate result thanexaminations done with the naked eye and a mere magnifying glass.
It is noteworthy that the same tactic (presenting a letter to the Public Defender with claims that a witness statement was not voluntary) was used in a previous murder case against Adidjah Palmer which contributed to the collapse of that case. A criminal investigation is to be launched to find the person responsible for the production and presentation of the forged letter to the Office of the Public Defender.
Yet another significant development came during the testimony of Detective Sergeant Patrick
Linton when it was discovered that his Facebook account was hacked into and postings made to give the impression that the Detective Sergeant held personal grudges against the main accused, Mr. Palmer. The Police had credible information about the hacker and took steps to conduct an investigation into the matter. However, based on legal advice, and out of an abundance of caution, certain aspects of the investigation were suspended to avoid any chance of the jury being prejudiced.
Threats against Prosecution Witnesses
Numerous threats were issued to several persons who had appeared, or were slated to appear as prosecution witnesses. The main prosecution witness had to be kept in protective custody prior to and for the duration of the trial due to several threats against his life and promises that he would be rewarded should he refuse to cooperate with the prosecution. He is still in protective custody. Relatives of the deceased have also been threatened and have to be protected by the State. Additionally, several Police officers have received threats and the homes of at least 2 have been visited by unknown persons who have in some instances, made enquiries regarding the officers and their families. Actual steps have been made to carry out the threats in relation to one of the officers.
Following the testimony of Detective Sergeant Linton, an attempt was made to fire bomb his home when unidentified persons threw a Molotov cocktail at his house resulting in the destruction of a section of the perimeter fencing. Subsequently, unknown persons returned to his house where they left a bag containing photographs of the Detective Sergeant, a cow eye and a cow tongue with his name written on it. It is to be noted that this ritual is practiced in other countries around the world as a warning to witnesses in court cases to keep their silence.
Threats made to the staff of one of the major telecommunicationsprovider resulted in fear and serious concerns among the staff who were forced to avoid wearing any clothing or paraphernalia that identified them as a part of the company. The Police have credible information that actual steps were taken to materialise some of the threats, resulting in the destruction of several meters of cable used by the telecommunication provider along the Mandela Highway resulting in denial of service to thousands of customers.
Intelligence suggests that numerous persons were paid to show up in the precincts of the court to show support for Adidjah Palmer and create disorder during the closing stages of the trial. The Police had to take steps to secure the court by closing off certain sections of the road and deploying a riot squad.
The last attempt that the Police is aware of represents allegations against Livingston Cain of attempting to bribe his colleague jurors with hundreds of thousands of dollars into returning a not guilty verdict. The case against Mr Cain will next be heard in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate Court on April 24, 2014.
The Police High Command is pleased with the sentence and hopes it will provide the murderers with the time needed to reflect upon the pain and shame they have brought to families and the society.

Vybz Kartel and his 3 co-accused get LIFE in prison for the murder of Lizard

Entertainer Vybz Kartel who received a life sentence for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams Thursday April 3 is to again face the court on another charge relating to the case.

Now the murder trial is over, Kartel will also stand trial in mid August, for attempting to pervert the course of justice.

In this case he is charged jointly with entertainers Vanessa Saddler, otherwise called ‘Gaza Slim’ and Andre Henry otherwise called ‘Pim Pim’.

The three were charged in 2012 after an investigation into an alleged scheme to deceive the police in their probe of Williams’ murder.

It is alleged that Saddler, in order to give the impression that Williams was not dead, reported to the Constant Spring police that she was robbed by him after the date he was believed murdered. A text was allegedly sent to Saddler's cellphone instructing her to make the report to the police.

Vybz Kartel making music in prison.
This has been a hot topic since his incarceration in 2011. But now a judge and the Department of Correctional Services could give the “Romping Shop” deejay the green light to record behind bars.
But it could come with conditions attached.
Yesterday High Court judge Justice Lennox Campbell postponed Vybz Kartel’s highly anticipated sentencing to next week Thursday, April 3, 2014.
Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, along with Shawn “Storm” Campbell, André St John, and Kahira Jones are facing life imprisonment after being convicted of the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams on March 13, 2014.
The ruling came after defense attorneys complained that they did not received a letter the judge instructed the Supreme Court to send to both the defense and prosecution attorneys.
Justice Campbell told the court that the degree of participation of each of the four convicted men will help determine how long they will be sentenced to. This means each men could be given a different sentence.
But one of the major issue of the sentencing is whether or not Vybz Kartel and Shawn Storm will be allowed to record new music while in prison.
Sources say the Department of Correctional Services will play a pivot role in determining if the men are fit to record behind bars as part of the Jamaican prison rehabilitation program. However, some proceeds from the earnings of their recordings could go towards repairing the damages done to the victim’s family.
